Detail: The existing Grade II Listed Maltings was refurbished and a modern zinc and brass-clad extension of a similar size constructed. A full height atrium was designed to act as a buffer between the two distinct structures.
Significant restoration has taken place throughout the project; traditional wind cowls have been reinstated, exposed beams have been restored and an original external wall is now a feature of the entrance atrium.
The building includes a museum, an expansion of The Granary Theatre to accommodate 130 seats with a viewing gallery, backstage areas and stores, a large art space and community facility, café, viewing gallery and tourist information.
Challenges: We wanted to provide a flexible space that fulfils the criteria of the various groups who will use the facilities as well as maintaining the heritage of the existing Maltings.
